Bullitt’s back: 2008 Bullitt Mustang

Forty years ago, the Ford Mustang Bullitt stirred car enthusiasts around the world in a motion picture, Bullitt. Starring Steve McQueen played the role of the legendary police Lt. Frank Bullitt, in time with Bullitt’s four decade celebration, the equally legendary car carrying the pony emblem is back.
The 1968 blockbuster movie featured the Dark Highland Green 1968 Mustang GT. And the seven minute car chase is a memory defining what a movie car chase must be for movie fanatics and car maniacs.
For 2008, under the Mustang’s hood is a 4.6 liter V8 engine delivering 315bhp at 6,000 rpm and 325 pound-feet of torque at spark ignition system. So who’s looking for more packed firepower?
“With all the improvements we’ve made to the engine and the taller 3.73-to-1 rear gear, the Bullitt will plant you firmly in the driver’s seat when you stand on the throttle. We’ve seen zero to 60 times drop by up to three tenths of a second,” said Paul Randle, chief engineer.
“There’s also plenty of 4,250rpm. Engine calipation is designed to increase throttle response for a snappier acceleration feel. The redline has been boosted by 250rpm to 6,500, with top-end speed bumped to 151 miles-per-hour.
“We wanted something that would rumble your heart, literally buzz you, and the Bullitt team delivered.”
The only visible identification is the word “Bullitt” dropped into a gunsight graphic in the center of the faux gas cap on the decklid. “The 2008 Mustang Bullitt, like the movie car, is a wolf in sheep’s clothing,” said Doug Gaffka, chief designer.
“Mustang is — and always has been — such an icon that it’s recognisable without the badges. But Bullitt’s clean exterior doesn’t give away the Ford Racing-inspired power and performance lurking under its skin.”
The car came back, do we expect the movie to come back too? Yes. Rumors are, Angelina Jolie’s better half, Brad Pitt is to play Steve Mcqueen’s role in the film renowned for featuring one of the best car chases in cinema history.
